Obituary of Laverne Thornton

Funeral services for Laverne Thornton, 86, Hale Center, TX, were held at 2:00 pm Monday, December 30, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church, Hale Center, TX, with Rev. Jimmy Cameron, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Hale Center Cemetery under the direction of Freeman-Abell Funeral Home of Hale Center. Mrs. Thornton died Saturday, December 28, 2002 in Garrison Geriatric Care Center in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on March 22, 1916 in Hubbard, TX to E.A. Madera and Lilly Peary Madera. She graduated from Cotton Center High School in 1934 and married Hoyt Thornton on September 13, 1939 in Cotton Center, TX. She owned and operated Holiday Hair Fashions in Boulder, CO for 20 years, upon retiring in 1979, she moved to Hale Center. She was active in the Hale Center Senior Citizens Association and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors; 2 sisters, Margaret Bourland of Hereford, TX and Rheba Burgess of Lubbock, TX. 1 brother, Ralph Madera of Plainview, TX 13 nieces and nephews She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Mary Simmons and a brother Lehmer Madera.
