Services for Owen Benn, 93, of Abernathy, TX, were held at 10:00 am Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy. Mr. Benn died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in Lubbock, TX. He was born July 14, 1911 to Christian Benn and Nellie Stoneback in Abernathy on the family farm. He married Virginia Spykes of Hermleigh, TX in 1940 and she preceded him in death. In 1976 he married Ruby Payne Renfro of Tahoka, TX. She also preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Abernathy High School and Texas Tech University and was a member of the Texas Tech and Abernathy Ex-Student Associations. He was a sixty year member of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Benn was a lifelong Abernathy area farmer and resident. He was a member of the IOOF, Rebekah Lodge and Abernathy Lions Club. He served as past president of the Hale County Farm Bureau, was a member of the Hale County Historical Assn, Texas National Guard, former Scoutmaster and served as treasurer for Texas Tech's Dad's Day. He served as Hale County director of the Plains Cotton Growers. Mr. Benn is survived by 2 sons, Frederick Benn of Houston, TX, Gary Benn of Albuquerque, NM, a sister Martha Benn of Albuquerque, NM, and 2 grandsons, Travis and Carson Benn. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Abernathy Ex-Students Association, P.O Box 1, Abernathy, TX 79311. Abell Funeral Home
