Obituary of Davy J. Mitchell

There will be a come and go life Celebration to honor the life of Davy J. Mitchell, 82, of Lubbock, TX. The family would love to visit with you and reflect on a life well lived. The celebration will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Monday, April 12, 2021 at The Outdoorsman, 6602 Slide Road, Lubbock. Light refreshments will be served. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 13, 2021, in the Morton Memorial Cemetery, N. Hwy 214, Morton, TX with Winston Hile officiating. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Mitchell died in Lubbock, April 1, 2021. Davy was born November 24, 1938 in Jal, NM to Wayne B. and Boyce (Southward) Mitchell and his first home in Morton was a one room dugout. His family farmed in the Morton community. Davy earned his Eagle Scout and graduated Morton High School. He then attended Texas Technological College earning his Bachelors in Education with a minor in History/PE. He played catcher for Minor League Baseball for a short time. He taught science and coached for a year in Morton ISD. He married Sara Jo Wallace, January 29, 1961 in Morton, TX. They lived in Morton, Gunnison, CO, Longmont, CO, Boulder, CO, Dalhart, TX and Lubbock, TX. Davy sold real estate in Colorado and Texas and later became owner and operator of The Outdoorsman in Lubbock for 44 years. He loved anything to do with the outdoors, hunting, fishing and Western American History. He actively followed his grandkids and had a heart for singing and enjoyed gospel music. Davy was a member and Board member of the Santa Fe Trail Association and the High Plains Jr. Rodeo Association Board for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morton and Lubbock. Davy is survived by his wife Sara Jo Mitchell of Lubbock, 2 daughters, Wendy Moats and husband Paul of Abernathy, TX and Jennifer "Jenny" Altman of Lubbock, 3 grandchildren, Dusty Moats of Hayden, CO, Dillon Moats of Abernathy, TX and Ellie Altman of Lubbock, and a sister Raquetta "Rocky" Wilson of Lubbock. Serving as honorary pallbearers are the past and present young employees that came alongside Davy in helping to make The Outdoorsman a successful business for the past 44 years. Some of these, we consider to be family.
