That was another time in a different field closer to the house that didn't have a playa lake near by so we had to invent some other form of entertainment. We were playing the old favorite of pummel you opponent with dirt clods. Typically they would impact in a harmless but glorious explosion of dirt. Occasionally a clod would be hiding an actual rock. Those weren't as fun... I still have the scare on my forehead. This particular incident we were close enough to the house we thought would hop over and find some first aid for my injury. I was sitting on the back porch stoop applying direct pressure with a wet rage and Toby had just returned with a band-aid when... the dreaded eyebrow arrived. Toby explained what happened as I was unintelligible through the blubbering. The concern about my injury faded as the story went on and you realized that it was not a hoeing injury and in fact we weren't even hoeing at all. The next thing I remember was this very deep booming voice that seemed to shake the very earth say "GET BACK OUT THERE AND HOE!" ...I don't recall if we got our ¢50 for that hour of labor or not, I'm guessing not.

Toby was a whiz with computers, so the last time they were here visiting Wendell I coaxed him over to my house to fix whatever was wrong with mine. Something is ALWAYS wrong with my computer and I don't know any third graders to help me out. Toby sat down and within seconds was doing stuff that made my head spin: opening multiple windows on the same screen to look at several programs at once, racing through files, programs, and "tools" I never knew were there. Within minutes (probably about five) he corrected the problem I'd had for months, rearranged the desktop, dumped countless junk files and had the thing working like crazy. He said we needed to reboot to make the "fix" permanent (or something) and asked for my password, which I confidently gave him - the same password I'd used hundreds of times since I brought the computer home. He turned it off, restarted, and keyed in the password. Nothing. He tried again. Nothing. And again, and again. Nothing. "Are you sure that is the right password?" Well, DUH, it's the same password I've ALWAYS used! We fooled with it well over an hour, even unplugged and re-plugged everything, I probably banged on the computer case too. Still nothing. Toby apologized for having apparently accidentally done something to lock up my computer. We were about to give up on the piece of junk when suddenly I sheepishly recalled: Oooh! When I upgraded to Window 10 it required at least one number and one grammatical symbol (like an exclamation mark) be included with the password. I gave him the number and symbol which he added to my now familiar password and it fired up like a charm. Toby took my stupidity in stride, just chuckled a bit. The computer worked great, fast, and everything, like new. Well, until they were back in Phoenix and I fouled it up again.

As kids Toby and I were admittedly the world's worst hoe hands. Instead of actually hoeing we would often play hide and seek in the tall weeds of the playa lake at the edge of the field. In my mind I can still hear Toby's voice calling for me one day "Todd! Todd! Come out, Dad's coming!" Thinking this was a clever ruse to rouse me out of my ingenious hiding spot, stayed firm and silent. But soon I wasn't the only thing that was silent. Gone were wrestling of foliage from my brother's desperate search for me. I listened intently a bit longer trying to detect the stealthy movements of my opponent. But silence. Beginning to question my judgement of the situation I called out softly "Toby, you there?" Silence. Now my confidence waning I peek out from my lair. The first thing I see is the long trail of dust settling from a recent traveler down the main dirt road leading to the turn row at the end of field I was supposed to be hoeing. My eyes widen as they follow the trail of dust from the main road onto the turn row and nearly to the end of the very cotton row I should have been on and there's Toby halfway to the road diligently working. At the end of the dust trail sure enough there's Dad pulling up in his pickup to check on us. In a panic I leap up like a Wylie Coyote cartoon chopping the heck out of those weeds down in the lake bed probably 15 - 20 yards from the nearest cotton plant. I furtively work my way onto a row and make my way up the hill narrowly avoiding the dreaded raised eyebrow.
I miss you already bro.

Toby was full of energy and mischief as a little kid.
On one of his visits to see his mom and dad, in Leander, I made fresh black eyed peas. He made a point of telling me several times that it reminded him of his childhood. He will be missed.

Toby was a great friend and will be sorely missed. His wit and humor helped me through many rough spots.
